What are LASA Sections?

LASA Sections exist to promote the common interest of Association members in specific areas of Latin American Studies. They are a means of increasing communication and interaction among persons of similar interests within the framework of the larger organization. They help to broaden involvement in LASA, and to make the Association more participatory and responsive to constituencies.

The following statements reflecting the mission and activities of each Section are provided by the Section chairs. The name of the current chair, his/her email address and office telephone number are also provided. Please feel free to contact that individual directly if you have specific questions related to a Section and to contact the LASA Secretariat if you wish to join a particular Section.

Brazil Section

The mission of the Brazil Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) is to promote Brazilian studies in an interdisciplinary manner and from a multinational perspective and to provide a space within LASA for scholars and others interested in Brazil to share knowledge and expertise. To these ends we sponsor a number of activities: a moderated listserv, the awarding of book and essay prizes. the holding of a business meeting and a reception during lasa congresses, the selection of special section panels for the congresses, the election or officers who deliberate on section matters, and the maintenance of a blog.

A missão da Seção Brasil da Associação de Estudos Latino-Americanos (LASA) é promover os estudos brasileiros de uma maneira interdisciplinar e de uma perspectiva multinacional. A Seção também promove um espaço dentro da LASA a acadêmicos e demais interessados no Brasil, que desejam compartilhar seus conhecimentos e experiências. Com este fim, nos responsabilizamos por várias atividades: listserv presidido, prêmios para livros e ensaios, recepção durante os congressos da LASA, reunião de trabalhos, sessão de painéis especiais para os congressistas, eleição dos colaboradores que deliberam sobre a Seção e alimentação do blog.

Announcement from Sexualities Studies Section

CALL TO NOMINATE CANDIDATES TO THE SYLVIA MOLLOY AND CARLOS MONSIVÁIS AWARDSThe Sexualities Section at LASA will grant two awards to two outstanding articles published in peer reviewed journals between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008. The articles will be judged on the quality of their research, analysis, writing and their contribution to the field of sexualities within the context of Latin American and/or Latino cultures in the United States. They bear the names of two foundational figures who broke barriers in their effort to rethink Latin American cultures within the registers of gender, sexuality and desire. The articles can be nominated by the authors themselves or by LASA members. People who nominate will provide confirmation of the date of publication and shall send a copy directly to each member of the Selection Committee. Nominations will be accepted until Thursday, April 30, 2009. Call for Papers to Brazil Section

Lasa-Brazil will sponsor 4 section panels. Calls for complete panels will be accepted until March 20th, 2008. Please submit travel requests at the same time Proposals can be sent to me or to or Hélio Guimarães. The section generally offers two partial subventions of $250.00 (more if we have more money). Other requests should be sent directly to LASA

BRAZIL SECTION REPORT 2007

The Brazil Section had its meeting on September 5th, at 7 pm. The meeting was conducted by the co-chairs, Susan Quinlan and Hélio Guimarães.

Regarding the election, three new members for the Brazil Section Council were elected for the period 2007-2010 – Eduardo Gomes (UFF), Elisabete Leal (UFRGS) e Ana Beatriz Gonçalves (Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora) – among six candidates, including Luiza Franco Moreira, May Bletz and Regina Felix.

Ana Paula Alves Ribeiro (UERJ), César Braga-Pinto (Rutgers University) and the treasurer Sônia Roncador (University of Texas) are in the Executive Council till 2009, when new elections will be held for three new members of the Executive Council and the two co-chairs. As far as treasurer’s report, as of August 2007, our Operating Account had US $ 6.500, with a membership of 331. The expenditures were US$ 2.000 for the reception; US$ 500 for the two book prizes; US$ 500 for the two essay prizes. The total balance was US $ 3.700.

The prizes for best books and essays were also announced during the meeting. The best book about Brazil, published in English, was Needs of the Heart: A Social And Cultural History of Brazil's Clergy And Seminaries, by Ken Serbin; the best book in Portuguese was FHC, Forças Armadas e Polícia: Entre o Autoritarismo e a Democracia, by Jorge Zaverucha. The prizes for best essays went to “Inventing the ‘mulher paulista’ ”, by Bárbara Weinstein, and to “Elsewhere in contemporary art: topologies of artists’s works, writings, and archives”, by Simone Osthoff.
